AMCC WOMEN'S TENNIS TOURNAMENT OPENS THIS WEEKEND WITH FIRST ROUND MATCHES
The AMCC women's tennis championship tournament begins this weekend when #6 Pitt-Bradford travels to #3 Penn State Behrend, and #5 Pitt-Greensburg heads to #4 Medaille College in first round action.
The AMCC women's tennis championship tournament begins this weekend when #6 Pitt-Bradford travels to #3 Penn State Behrend, and #5 Pitt-Greensburg heads to #4 Medaille College in first round action. #1 Franciscan University and #2 Penn State Altoona each receive first round byes.
Top-seeded Franciscan (10-4, 8-0 AMCC) enters the tournament undefeated in conference play with a perfect 8-0 mark. The Barons have dominated AMCC competition, as they have not dropped a singles or doubles set all season. No. 1 Madelyn Conrad, No. 2 Maria Binette, No. 3 Grace Hammel, and No. 4 Julia Razook all posted 8-0 records in singles action. Doubles partners, No. 1 Maria Binette/Madelyn Conrad, No. 2 Taranee Karimpour/Julia Razook, and No. 3 Grace Hammel/Emmy Mathias, also completed perfect 8-0 seasons against conference compeititon.
#2 Penn State Altoona (7-4, 6-2 AMCC) is led in singles play by sophomore Brayley Lewis who has posted a 6-2 record at the No. 2 position, and freshman Sophia Girol who went 5-3 at the No. 3 slot. Lewis and sophomore Annie Ruggles completed an impressive 7-1 conferenec mark at No. 2 doubles.
Winning nine of the past 12 conference titles, and 13 total, Penn State Behrend (6-5, 6-2 AMCC) enters the conference tournament as the #3 seed. The Lions are led by senior Kelly Miller with a 5-2 record at No. 2 singles and senior Celeste Bentley's 6-1 overall record, as she went 5-1 at No. 3 singles. Miller and Bently also compiled a 6-1 record at the No. 1 doubles spot.
After not making the conference postseason last year, Medaille (7-3, 5-3 AMCC) has earned the #4 seed heading into this year's tournament. The Mavs have seen an impressive freshman season by rookie Jasmine Mott, who went 5-3 at No. 1 singles, while No. 3 doubles partners senior Cho Thiri Tun and sophomore Katherine Turner went 5-1.
Pitt-Greensburg (3-7, 3-5 AMCC) has earned the #5 seed and is led by senior Amanda Jepsen who has a 6-3 record at the No. 1 singles spot and sopomore Rebecca Beaumont with a 6-1 record at No. 5 singles.
Pitt-Bradford (3-7, 3-5 AMCC) rounds out the tournament as the #6 seed. Sophomore Ashley Stoltz has compiled a 6-1 record at No. 4 singles, while freshman Jessica Jordan was 5-2 at the No. 6 spot.
First round matches will take place on Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15. #6 Pitt-Bradford will travel to #3 Penn State Behrend on Saturday, and #5 Pitt-Greensburg will take on Medaille Sunday afternoon. #1 Franciscan and #2 Penn St. Altoona will receive first round byes.
The semifinals and championship matches will be on October 21 and 22 at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, PA. The tournament winner will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Please visit the AMCC Fall Championships page for full championships coverage.
