CABRINI WOMEN EARN SECOND AMCC SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP
The Cabrini University women's swim team returned to the top of the AMCC after winning the program's second AMCC Championship Saturday evening.
Cabrini finished the four-day championship meet with 545 points, while Penn State Behrend's 517.5 points were good for second. Alfred State College (512 points), Penn State Altoona (184.5), Franciscan University (171) and Pitt-Bradford (148) rounded out the meet standings.
Behrend senior Gwendolyn Lowery was named the AMCC Swimmer of the Year, while Penn St. Altoona freshman Danielle Bye is the Newcomer of the Year, and Alfred State's Sarah Stevens earned Diver of the Year honors.
The Cavaliers entered tonight's final session with a five point lead over Penn State Behrend, but top three finishes in four of the night's six events helped Cabrini earn a comfortable victory.
Sophomore Lauren Finnegan opened the session with her second gold medal, as the sophomore won the 1,650-yard freestyle in record time.
Cabrini punctuated its championship performance with a third place finish in the meet's final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Senior Candace Brownand freshman Amber Garrison joined DeLusant and Finnegan to post a time of 3:53.68.
Behrend came back with three swimmers in the top three spots in the 100 freestyle led by Jessica Wyckoff. The sophomore earned her second individual championship with a time of 53.67. She edged teammate Maryn Horn, who was runner up in 53.84, while Paola Maldonado tied Bye from Penn State Altoona for third place with a time of 56.26.
Bye's individual points on Saturday were part of a strong week for the freshman in the conference championships. On Thursday, Bye set a Penn State Altoona team record in the 200 Yard I.M. when she clocked in at 2:18.92 to place second in that 'A' final. On Friday, she set another team record when she claimed the runner-up spot in the 100 Yard Butterfly 'A' final with a time of 1:00.69.
Alfred State's Sarah Stevens completed the sweep on the diving board by winning the 3m competition with a score of 368.45. She was also part of the 2nd place 400 free relay team that finished in 3:50.12.
