#3 ALFRED STATE, #5 PENN STATE ALTOONA ADVANCE IN WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT
No. 3 Alfred State College and No. 5 Penn State Altoona each earned first round victories in the AMCC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament to advance to the semifinal round, slated for next Wednesday. Alfred State earned a 3-0 victory over No. 6 La Roche University, while Penn State Altoona got the 2-1 upset win over No. 4 Mount Aloysius College.
Alfred State 3, La Roche 0
The Alfred State women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over #6 seed La Roche in the first round of the AMCC women's soccer tournament.
It took nearly 30 minutes for what would be the game-winning goal to be scored, as Alfred State's Ava Bruehwiler netted the game's first goal at 27:51 of the first half. Bruehwiler was assisted by Kaitlyn Howell and Jillian Wright, and the Pioneers would hold that lead until through halftime.
The Redhawks continued to fight back throughout the second half, but the Pioneers would score a pair of goals within 2:52 of each other in the second half to punctuate the victory. Both goals were scored by freshman forward Isabella Hoffman at 80:58 and 83:50. The first of two was unassisted, while Karlee Hargather set her up for the second.
Chances were few for La Roche, being held to just three shots on the night, all of which were on goal. Pioneer goalkeeper Madeline Cox registered saves on all three shots.
Alfred State returns to action on Wednesday, November 5 when they travel to No. 2 Pitt-Greensburg for the semifinal matchup. Game time is TBD.
Penn State Altoona 2, Mount Aloysius 1
Mount Aloysius opened the scoring in the contest, finding the back of the net in the 27th minute off a goal by Sara Borlie. Five minutes later, Penn State Altoona responded, with Kylei Martin setting up Jordan Yaletsko to make it 1-1.
The Lions followed up their first goal with another goal four minutes later, as Rachel Rutkowski set up Ivory MoDavis to make it 2-1 at the half.
The second half would see no goals scored between the two sides, as Penn State Altoona looked to hold onto their lead. The Lions would concede three shots, two of them on goal.
Altoona goalkeeper Mya Torres made five saves off six shots on goal.
The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team will travel to Erie to face Penn State Behrend in the semifinals of the AMCC Championship Tournament on November 5. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
