MEDAILLE NAMES RACHELLE MATTHYS AS NEXT HEAD WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
Medaille College Athletic Director, Amy M. DeKay, introduced Rachelle "Rocko" Matthys as the next head coach of the Women's Basketball program.
Medaille College Athletic Director, Amy M. DeKay, introduced
Rachelle "Rocko" Matthys as the next head coach of the Women's
Basketball program.
Matthys joins the Medaille Mavericks for her first year as a
collegiate head coach. Matthys just returned from her fourth year
of playing professional basketball overseas. She played in Germany,
Australia and England during which she captured a Division II
championship title for the DBBL in Germany.
"Rachelle Matthys comes to Medaille with significant playing
experience at the Division I level, as well as professional playing
experience in Germany, Australia, and England for four years,"
DeKay said. "Her knowledge of the game, coaching experiences, and
familiarity with the Lady Mavs makes her an invaluable asset to the
program as we hope to continue to compete for Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference titles year in and year out."
In addition to playing basketball, Matthys attained invaluable
experience while abroad. During her time in Germany, Matthys served
as Basketball and Strength and Conditioning Coach for U11, U15 and
U17 teams, which achieved Top 8 and Top 4 rankings in all of
Germany. While in Australia, Matthys served as an Active After
School Community Coach for 4 schools in the Albury/Wodonga area
while assisting in Midnight Basketball programs for underprivileged
youth. While in England she served as a Community Coach for Durham
University. In addition, Matthys attained a Master's in Science
Education from the University at Durham.
In between her season in England and Germany, Matthys was the
assistant to the Director of Player Performance for the WNBA team:
New York Liberty. While there, she assisted with Strength and
Conditioning and player rehabilitation.
A native of Saint Clair, Michigan, Matthys attended the University
at Buffalo and was a four-year letter winner and co-captain for the
Bulls. She graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise
Science and a Concentration in Coaching.
