The AMCC softball season starts out with two of the top teams squaring off against each other. Penn State Behrend and Mount Aloysius College tied for the top spot in the league in the coaches preseason rankings.
Mount Aloysius softball enters the Penn-State Behrend doubleheader 6-6 on the season. Tied with Behrend for the top spot in preseason polls, Mount Aloysius is led from the mound by preseason pitcher of the year Sierra Walters, currently third in the conference in ERA (1.5). Leading the Mounties from the batter’s box is last year’s AMCC Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, Sarah Henninger, coming off a season which saw her lead the AMCC in hits, runs scored, RBI, doubles, and triples, while batting .510. Sophomore Maggie Cypher has also found success hitting this season, with a .407 batting average good for tenth highest in the conference. Cypher also occupies the fifth spot on the AMCC leaderboard for stolen bases (5).
The Lions are back in action since defeating John Carroll on March 28, as Behrend swept the Blue Streaks 4-0 and 3-0 and enter the game with an 11-7 overall record. Sophomore Abby Tingley was been named the AMCC Pitcher of the Week as she recorded her second shutout of the season and sixth win by allowing three hits over seven innings in the complete game vs. John Carroll. Tingley leads the AMCC with a 1.24 ERA and six wins. Last week, junior 1B/3B Jocelyn McNany tallied four hits, two in each game to lead the Lions to a pair of wins over John Carroll. McNany tallied two hits with a triple and one run in game one, while getting two more hits in the nightcap with a pair of doubles. Senior pitcher Kayla Lindberg is eight strikeouts away from 200 for her career. As a team, the Lions pace the conference in doubles (34) and home runs (6), while ranking second in hits (144) and RBIs (87).
