AMCC Softball Game of the Week: Medaille College Mavericks @ La Roche College Redhawks (Saturday, March 28)
The first AMCC Softball Game of the Week for 2015 features the Medaille Mavericks and La Roche Redhawks. According to the 2015 Coaches Preseason Poll, the two teams were picked to finish in seventh and eighth places. However, with strong starts to the season, the Mavs sit in first place and the Redhawks in fourth.
Medaille is off to a hot start and currently lead the conference in runs scored and hits. A pair of freshmen have been sparkplugs at the top of the order as Sharon Trigilio and Alexis Domros both have matching .417 batting averages ranking them both in the top ten in the AMCC. Trigilio currently is currently in first in the league with 20 hits and 19 runs out of the lead-off spot. She also is third in the conference with a .729 slugging percentage as she has eight extra-base hits. Juniors Shaina Bunker and Kiera Diana and sophomore Morgan Ziemba have done well hitting in the middle of the order as they all have double-digit RBI totals thus far, with all three of them ranking in the top-five in the AMCC.
The La Roche Softball team enters this weekend’s AMCC opener fresh off their best start since 2012. The Lady Redhawks opened the season in Myrtle Beach, SC where they went 6-4 and they currently have a 7-7 record. Freshman pitcher Savannah Leonard’s no-hitter in her first collegiate start highlights the team’s early success. Leonard was honored as the AMCC’s pitcher of the week following her no-hitter and she currently ranks third in the AMCC in wins (3), strikeouts (35) and ERA (2.63). Seniors, and 2014 AMCC All-Conference Second Teamers, Kaylee Zozos and Elizabeth Palumbo pace the offense. Zozos, La Roche’s senior catcher and cleanup hitter, led the AMCC in home runs in 2014. She belted a grand slam against Medaille in their matchup last season and also ranked third in the conference in walks and RBI. She holds the school’s single season and career home run records and has started nearly every game at catcher in her four seasons. Palumbo plays in right field and hits in the leadoff position. She is a threat on the basepaths, stealing five bases so far this season, and leads the AMCC in hits. Palumbo has had three 4 for 4 games and has scored 14 runs in 13 games. The Lady Redhawks boast one of the strongest pitching staffs (second in ERA) and offenses (third in batting average) in the conference.
