Byers had a big weekend to help the Lions open their 2017 season with a 2-1 record against some strong non-conference opponents in the Jim Coleman Invitational. In a 3-1 victory over Southern Virginia on Friday night, he had 12 kills, 11 digs, four total blocks, and two service aces. In a 3-1 loss to Mount St. Joseph on Saturday evening, he put up 15 kills, 10 digs, three total blocks, and one ace. Later that night, he helped the Lions defeat Wittenberg 3-1 with 19 kills, six digs, three total blocks, and three aces. For the week, Byers averaged 3.83 kills per set, 2.25 digs per set, 0.83 blocks per set, and 0.50 aces per set. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the Coleman Invitational for his performance.

BEST OF THE REST: Medaille S Matt Dempsey had an outstanding opening weekend, helping the Mavericks go 2-0 in a pair of five set thrillers, dishing out a career-high 65 assists, and was one dig away from a double-double, as Medaille came back from a 2-1 hole to win 3-2 over Fontbonne, and he was just as good in the second match on Sunday, dishing out another 38 assists and adding 14 digs defensively...Hilbert OH Michael Podgorny was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Jim Coleman Memorial Tournament at Wittenberg, posting his first double-double of the season against Southern Virginia when he finished with 13 kills & 13 digs.
