Entering the final weekend of AMCC play, the top two teams will be squaring off on Saturday in the AMCC Men's Volleyball Match of the Week. Buffalo State enters the game at the top of conference standings with a perfect 4-0 AMCC record, while the Behrend Lions sit in second place at 3-1. The Bengals and the Lions are battling it out for the top spot to earn the regular season championship to go along with the top seed and hosting rights for the upcoming AMCC Men's Volleyball Championship Tournament.
After winning each of their first four AMCC matchups, the Buffalo State men's volleyball team looks to keep the momentum going against Penn State Behrend with potentially the one-seed in the AMCC Tournament on the line. With just four games to go, the Bengals are already past their win total from last season as they have clinched a spot in the conference tournament. This will be the second time the two sides have met this season with the Bengals winning in four sets back in January. Leading the Bengals this year is Gavin Wilczewski with 197 kills across 59 sets played, averaging over three kills per set. Also having a strong showing this year is Kaden Strong with 183 kills and 54.0 total blocks. Defensively, Alex Vega has been a staple for Buffalo State with 285 digs averaging 3.39 digs per set and a .967 reception percentage.
The Lions have won three in a row, defeating Carlow twice and Houghton once. Behrend swept the Celtics and the Highlanders in AMCC action on Saturday, before facing Carlow in a non-conference match on Tuesday. In the win on Tuesday vs. Carlow, the Lions posted a season-high 18 service aces. Behrend posted 9.56 kills per set while holding the two opponents to 4.78 kills. In those three wins, Luke Mumpower tallied 39 assists, 18 digs and eight service aces. Lewis Rhodes led with 14 kills and six blocks in three matches. Kyle Hoffman is first on the team and fourth in the conference with 221 kills and sixth in kills per set (2.76). Behrend continues to rank nationally in blocks per set and is eighth with a 2.17 average. Rhodes sits 18th in NCAA statistics in blocks per set (.98).
