HUEY, RIVERA- BERRIOS SWEEP WEEKLY ECAC SOUTH MEN'S VOLLEYBALL AWARDS
Penn State Altoona men's volleyball swept the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III South Region weekly awards, as sophomore outside hitter Matt Huey was named Player of the Week and freshman libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios was tabbed the Rookie of the Week on Wednesday.
Penn State Altoona men's volleyball swept the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Division III South Region weekly awards, as sophomore outside hitter Matt Huey was named Player of the Week and freshman libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios was tabbed the Rookie of the Week on Wednesday.
Huey's ECAC Player of the Week award is his fourth this season. Earlier this week, he was announced as the Player of the Week by both the AMCC and the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).
The sophomore continued his excellent play in a 2-2 week for Penn State Altoona, helping his team finish the regular season with a program record number of wins (17).
In a tough 3-2 loss at strong non-conference opponent Juniata College last Wednesday evening, Huey had 19 kills, six total blocks, four digs, and three service aces. The sophomore followed that up with 18 kills and 11 digs in a 3-1 win over NEAC opponent Hilbert College on Friday, a victory that clinched a conference tournament berth for his team. In Saturday's NEAC regular season finale, Huey posted 14 kills and three total blocks in a 3-0 loss to Medaille College before putting up 15 kills, eight digs, four aces, and one block in a 3-2 victory over D'Youville College.
On the week, Huey had 66 kills (3.88 kills per set), 23 digs (1.35 digs per set), 10 total blocks (0.59 blocks per set), and seven aces (0.41 aces per set) while averaging 4.62 points per set.
For Rivera-Berrios, the ECAC Rookie of the Week honor is the first weekly award of his collegiate career. The freshman defensive specialist had a strong week for the Lions.
At Juniata, Rivera-Berrios had four digs and added five set assists. In his team's playoff-clinching win over NEAC opponent Hilbert on Friday, he posted a season-high 18 digs. In more NEAC action on Saturday, Rivera-Berrios finished with seven digs in a 3-0 loss to Medaille before posting nine digs in a 3-2 victory over D'Youville.
On the week, Rivera-Berrios recorded 38 digs, averaging 2.24 digs per set.
