The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced it's 2015-16 Team Academic Award today and for the first time in the program's history, the Hilbert College men's volleyball team has been honored by the AVCA for its outstanding academic success.
The Hawks, who earned a 2015-16 cumulative team gpa of 3.42 were one of only 11 men's volleyball teams (Division I and III) to be recognized this academic year.
Leading the way in the classroom for Hilbert was senior Outside Hitter Korey Schwab who achieved a perfect 4.0 en route to his May 2016 graduation. Freshman Michael Podgorny trailed slightly with a 3.93 in his rookie campaign and sophomore Brett Kane (3.78) as well as junior Adam Heftka (3.77) were side-by-side in lifting the Hawks. Tyler Sieczkarek (3.65) and Tanner Makowski (3.54) contributed to the team's academic success off the court while helping the program set several team athletic awards as well.
The 2016 men's volleyball team set single season All-Time win (11) and All-Time Conference win (8) records in just their second season competing in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) after several years as members of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) and the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA). The Hawks were ranked in the top 20 in Division III in Digs per Set for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
The AVCA Team Academic Award honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. 764 teams across all levels of competition were included and established an all-time high number of schools this academic year.
