MEN'S SOCCER PREPARES FOR AMCC CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
The AMCC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament kicks off this weekend, with Alfred State College clinching the #1 seed for the tournament championship.
The AMCC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament kicks off this weekend, with Alfred State College clinching the #1 seed for the tournament championship. Alfred State and Penn State Behrend finished the regular season as co-champions with identical 6-0-2 records, but the Pioneers won the tie-breaker to earn the No. 1 seed. First round games will kick off this Saturday with #6 Pitt-Bradford traveling to #3 Mount Aloysius College and #4 Hilbert College hosting #5 Pitt-Greensburg. Alfred State and #2 Penn State Behrend will each receive first round byes.
Top seeded Alfred State enters the tournament with a 6-0-2 record in conference play. The Pioneers are led offensively by freshman F Travis Scandalis who has recorded five goals and three assists in conference play while Chuck Domm has added four goals and two assists. Senior M Farhan Abdi leads the Pioneers with four assists in AMCC play. Senior GK Alex Preston leads the league with a 6-0 record in conference play, giving up an AMCC-best zero goals and recording a 1.000 save percentage.
Also with a 6-0-2 is Penn State Behrend, coming in as the No. 2 seed. Senior M Blake Cooper leads the Lions, and ranks fifth in the AMCC, with four goals in conference play. Junior M Dylan Akut tops the Lions with four assists. Freshman GK Anthony Scalise holds a 5-0-2 record against AMCC teams this season, as his two goals against and 0.29 goals-against average both rank second in the league.
Mount Aloysius has earned the No. 3 seed with a 6-1-1 conference record. Leading the charge for the Mounties is senior M/F Juan Camacho. Camacho tops the AMCC with eight goals in league play while teammate Louis Bez has recorded an AMCC-best seven assists to go along with six goals. Mountie GK Sam Denchfield ranks third in the conference with six goals against and a 1.00 goals-against average.
No. 4 seed Hilbert College comes into the tournament with a 4-3-1 mark in AMCC play. Junior M Carter Burke leads the Hawks with three goals and four assists in league play, while Jason Vullo also added three goals against conference teams. Hilbert GK Daniel Downs ranks fourth in the AMCC with 30 saves with a .652 save percentage and a 2.67 goals-against average.
Entering the tournament as the No. 5 seed is Pitt-Greensburg with a 4-4 record. Sophomore F Matt Armenio ranks second in the AMCC with seven goals in league play, while also adding two assists. Sophomore GK Brett Barnes ranks fourth in conferene play with a .758 save percentage and carries a 1.33 goals-against average.
Rounding out the field with a 2-5-1 record is No. 6 Pitt-Bradford. Freshman M Kyle Carlsen has recorded three goals in conference play for the Panthers. Goalkeeper Troy VanSickle leads the conference with 66 saves and has a .733 save percentage.
First round games will be played on Saturday, November 2, with the top two seeds receiving byes. The semifinals will take place on Wednesday, November 6, with the championship game on Saturday, November 9. The AMCC champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
