The Penn State Behrend (17-2, 10-2 AMCC) men's basketball team will host the La Roche College Redhawks (17-2, 12-0 AMCC) in the AMCC Game of the Week on Thursday, January 31 at 8 p.m.
The Redhawks have won twelve straight and sit atop the AMCC standings at a perfect 12-0. They come into tonight's game at 17-2 and are undefeated after the new year. AMCC Player of the Week, Zach Gould, is the Redhawks' top scorer and the second leading scorer in the AMCC at 16.7 points per game. He is one of the nation's top shooters from long range, ranking sixth in the nation in 3-pt percentage and seventh in 3-pointers. Tyler Frederick provides La Roche will an imposing front court presence. Frederick averages just short of a double-double at 15.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. RayQuan Phifer provides a threat on both offense and defense, as he ranks fourth in the conference in steals and assists, tenth in scoring, twelfth in blocks, and fourteenth in rebounding.
The Lions head into the contest winners of their last five games. Behrend went 3-0 last week, defeating Mt. Aloysius 58-51, Hilbert 85-80, and Penn State Altoona 80-46. Senior guard Andy Niland averaged 16 points and 4.7 assists per game in action last week, while senior forward Dan Wanker is 28 points away from reaching the 1,000-point milestone. Sophomore forward Nolan Nuara has connected on 24 of his last 28 field goal attempts (85.7%), while Niland and senior Mike Fischer are each connecting on over 45% of their three point attempts.
Behrend and La Roche are meeting for the 74th time in program history. The Lions hold a 45-28 all-time record against the Redhawks dating back to the 1977-78 season. However, La Roche has won the last four meetings against Behrend dating back to 2017.
