BEHREND LIONS FALL TO NO. 4 MARIETTA
The Penn State Behrend baseball team had their season come to an end against No. 4 Marietta College, 7-3, in the NCAA Regional Tournament hosted by the Pioneers on Sunday.
The Pioneers scored seven unanswered runs to advance to the championship series against top-seed Rowan. The Lions got an early start on Marietta with two runs in the first inning. After Anthony Slate walked, Josh Wagner doubled and Colin Harger walked to load the bases. Isaac Stouffer reached on a fielder's choice to score Slate while Juston Jones singled to send home Wagner for a 2-0 lead. Behrend kept Marietta off the scoreboard for five innings before adding another run in the top of the sixth. On the Pioneer's first relief pitcher, Tanner Cicchini pinch hit and knocked in Stouffer to make it 3-0 .
In the bottom of the frame, Marietta used three hits to score three runs to even the game. The Pioneers took the lead in the seventh with a two-run homer and added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning on a double by Damian Yenzi. Starter Caleb Caldwell pitched five solid innings before making way for Ben Bowen. Bowen threw two innings and suffered his first loss of the season. Sam Mathews, the third pitcher of the game, pitched 3.2 innings to improve to 8-2 on the season. Stouffer and Jones each went 3-for-4 on the day.
The Lions held an 11-9 advantage in hits while both teams stranded 10 runners.
