AMCC Baseball Game of the Week: Penn St. Behrend Lions @ Mount Aloysius College Mounties (Saturday, March 28)
The first AMCC Baseball Game of the Week for 2015 features the Penn St. Behrend Lions and the Mount Aloysius Mounties. The two teams finished in second and third place, respectively, in 2014 and tied for a second place finish in the 2015 Coaches Preseason Poll. The Lions took two of three games from the Mounties in 2014.
The Lions are off to an 8-2 start to the season and are currently on a five-game winning streak. Behrend started the season with eight games in the sunshine state and emerged victorious in six of those contests. They added wins seven and eight this past weekend picking up a sweep of non-conference foe Centre. Behrend’s offense has excelled early in the season, led by sophomore catcher Brian Bohman. A first-team All-Conference selection a year ago as a freshman, Bohman has picked up right where he left off hitting at .459 clip with three doubles, two triples and two homeruns. He leads the team with 10 RBI’s and has five steals. The Lions' lineup features four hitters hitting above .400 in Bohman, senior Nathan Junk, and juniors John Hlavinka and Corey Bowers. On the hill, starters sophomores Jack Herzing and Justin Rohrer are having strong starts to their 2015 campaign. Herzing is tied for the conference lead in wins with three and has struck out 18 in 15.1 innings of work. Rohrer returns as a sophomore coming off a 2014 season in which he finished third all-time in AMCC history with 1.10 ERA. So far this season he is 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA. The Lions last won the conference championship in 2013 and are looking to win the program’s sixth overall title in 2015.
The Mount Aloysius baseball team enters Saturday's doubleheader versus Behrend following a dramatic conference split with Pitt-Greensburg in their AMCC opener on Wednesday afternoon. The Mounties responded to a game one defeat with a 9-8 victory in extra innings, as sophomore Kyle Droz drove home the winning run on a single, and junior Brady Wright retired the Bobcat side in order to seal the win. Junior Connor Bowie has paced the Mounties offensively with a .373 average this season including a team-leading four home runs and 18 runs scored to go with 14 RBI's. Senior Cory Dick has hit .349 with 12 RBI's and sophomore Ben Legath is hitting .327 with 14 RBI's, including a 3-for-5 showing with five RBI's in game two against Greensburg. The Mountie bulllpen trio of junior Christopher Nolan, sophomore Rodney Patterson and Wright have been tremendous this season, as the three have combined for a 5-0 record in relief.
