Longtime Hilbert College Sports Information and former coach Kara Rehbaum has been inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame class of 2023.
Longtime Hilbert College Assistant Athletic Director, SID and former coach Kara Rehbaum has been inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023. The ceremony took place November 8 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.
Rehbaum's illustrious athletic career began in Irondequoit, NY where she was a standout four sport athlete. She excelled in basketball, where she was a three-time all-county selection and Rochester Times-Union Player of the Year in 1980.
At Canisius College, she was a three-time All-American and graduated as the Golden Griffins' all-time leading scorer and rebounder. She is still the only Canisius player, women and men, to achieve 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
After graduation, Rehbaum played professionally for the Atlanta Comets of the Women's American Basketball Association.
She returned to Canisius in 1986 as an assistant coach of the women's team and was named head coach in 1993. In just her first season Rehbaum led the Golden Griffins toa 19-8 record and was named Coach of the Year by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Rehbaum has made Hilbert her home for the past 19 years, first as coach of the women's basketball team and then as Assistant Athletic Director with duties as the Sports Information Director while serving as the Senior Woman Administrator. She was honored by her peers in 2018 with the college's prestigious Mother Collette Award, which recognizes a staff member who demonstrates a high level of commitment to the Catholic Franciscan mission and values and maintains a positive rapport with the students and colleagues across the Hilbert campus.
In addition to the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame, Rehbaum is a member of the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame and the New York Section V Basketball Hall of Fame. She was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2014 MAAC Honor Roll Class.
