Over Labor Day weekend the Mount Aloysius College women’s volleyball team traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico for exhibition matches against Puerto Rican NCAA universities. With the help of Puerto Rico College Sports Tours, Inc., the Mounties were able to experience and play games in the beautiful culture of San Juan. The team was able to play teams on the NCAA DII level, which was great competition to help them prepare for the season. The Mounties had to cope with the use of the international game ball and the rival teams speaking a different language. “It was a great experience. We got to see what the game is like in another section of the world,” stated junior setter Katie Reed. “We had to really work together as a team to get around the obstacles that we were facing. The ball was different and the heat was not what we were used to, but the differences helped us work on our team atmosphere and communication, which will help us in the long run.”
As well as playing volleyball, the Mounties toured parts of the country. The team took a hike through the rainforest, walked around Old San Juan and relaxed on Puerto Rican beaches after the games. This once in a lifetime experience is something the Mount Aloysius College women’s volleyball team will remember for quite a while.
