Pitt-Greensburg is the AMCC men's basketball champion for 2016 and will represent the conference with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
The third seeded Bobcats upset #2 Penn State Behrend in the semifinals on Saturday and then upended top seeded Hilbert College, 76-74, on Sunday to claim their third conference championship and first since the 2000 season.
The Bobcats were led by three seniors in the title game. Guard Jerell Figueroa had 18 points and 4 assists; forward Rocco Contristano scored 19 points to go with 8 rebounds; and standout reserve wing Mike Connelly came through with 15 points and 5 boards.
The Hawks, winners of the regular season title, were better on the glass than UPG but could not overcome a weak shooting day, especially at the free throw line. Nevertheless Hilbert had three players score in double figures: junior guard Jalen Smith (26 points), senior forward Jerame Owens (16 points, 20 rebounds) and junior guard Kirkland Ottey (14 points, 4 assists).
Pitt-Greensburg will learn their fate in the NCAA tournament when the pairings and schedule are announced on Monday.
