HILBERT ATHLETICS HELPS AT SPECIAL OLYMPICS OF WNY BASKETBALL

Twenty Hilbert College student-athletes and coaches participated in the Special Olympics of WNY basketball competition which was held at the Clearfield Community Center in Amherst, New York on Saturday, March 25.

"We are extremely grateful to have volunteer support from Hilbert College for our basketball competition, in addition to other events throughout the year," said Daniel Kuberka Director of Program Special Olympics New York, Western Region. "Having college athletes come out to connect with our Special Olympics athletes always seems to be a memorable experience for both groups – everyone begins to realize that no matter the ability level of an athlete or the challenges they face, each individual is striving to do their best.  Competition brings out the best in all athletes at all levels."

The Special Olympic teams who were represented in the annual basketball event were:  Allegany ARC Green Machine, Canisius, Cheektowaga, Grand Island, Hornets Basketball, Lancaster Cardinals, and Park.

The Hilbert Hawks assisted the Olympians in level one and level two skills competitions, which were designed for them to test their individual shooting, dribbling, and passing skills.  The athletes were grouped to compete against other participants of similar ability level, and were awarded ribbons based on their order of finish.

"I was extremely thrilled to be a part of this amazing experience," said Tiffany Buscaglia, the athletic department's spring 2017 intern.  "The event was a successful tribute to the partnership of the NCAA Division III, the Special Olympics, and Hilbert College Athletics."

The event also included the two divisions participating in a basketball team tournament where the volunteers worked the game clock and recorded stats.  Congratulations goes out to the tournament winners of the two divisions: The Allegany ARC Green Machine and the Park Team.
